We were immediately impressed by the building that housed Heartland Cafe; you could tell there was history there.
The building was constructed in 1902 and originally served as a local Baptist church. Over the last century, the structure transitioned from a place of worship to a retail shop and finally into the popular dining establishment we found ourselves in for lunch.
We were seated quickly and felt at home. Water and menus were promptly delivered to the tableside and accompanied by smiling faces.
The menu was basic lunch fare: sandwiches, soups, salads and pastas. My choice was the Bacon, Avocado and Turkey Wrap, and his was the Heartland Angus Double Cheeseburger. We both ordered strawberry lemonades to go along with our lunches.
The food and drinks arrived promptly. We were surprised that his cheeseburger looked more like a hoagie submarine sandwich, but it still looked delicious. What looked like shredded meat was piled high on the bun. It was tasty enough; it just wasn’t the hamburger he expected. The wrap was big; it was well stuffed and plentiful, but the turkey inside seemed a little dry. Overall, the taste was fine, but it lacked finesse. I dare say a little extra salt or other seasoning would have made everything pop.
The lemonades were refreshing and house-made; they were flavoured with just the right amount of sweetness and tang.
We did not opt for dessert.
The food was good but not stellar, and the prices were a little high for a basic lunch menu and the food on our plate. It seemed like we were paying a premium for the pretty setting and good service.
Special mention goes out to staff member Allison for her friendly demeanour and attentiveness.
Overall, I would say we would come here again for the ambiance and the great service, but the quality of the food didn’t match the price.
